Every struggle you see in a learner goes back to the brain

Finally, one framework for everyone in a learner’s life.

I created The Learning Framework®, a model of the five conditions every brain needs in order to learn, built on the neuroscience of how learning happens in the brain. It gives the learner, the parent, the educator, and the specialist one common language, so when a learner is struggling, everyone can see which condition for learning is not being met and respond together.

Why this matters

The struggles you see in learners are common

What learners are facing

26%

of schools say students’ lack of focus severely impacts learning.

NCES, 2024

80%

of educators say students are less motivated than before the pandemic.

EdWeek Research Center, 2023

1 in 9

children in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Danielson et al., 2024

About 1 in 10

children ages 5 to 11 have very low working memory, and most struggle in school.

Alloway et al., 2009

What the adults who support them have been given to work with

88%

of parents believe their child reads at or above grade level. Fewer than half of children do.

Learning Heroes and Gallup, 2023

49%

of common brain myths were believed by teachers in one study, and 45% by parents in another.

Dekker et al., 2012; Benneker et al., 2023

28%

of students say they get to make choices about what they learn. Agency grows when adults build in real choice.

Gallup, 2024; Reeve and Cheon, 2021

0 of 48

textbooks used to prepare teachers covered the research-based strategies for how people learn.

NCTQ, 2016

Parents and educators are working hard with the information they have been given. When that information about the brain and about development is incomplete, even a caring response can miss the cause. I help you understand what is happening in the brain, so you can choose the response that fits. If you already have programs and tools in place, I help you adjust them. If you are starting from nothing, I give you simple tools and strategies to begin. Either way, small changes can improve the learning experience for everyone involved.

Where all of my work begins

The Five Conditions for Learning

Every partnership starts here. I built The Learning Framework® from peer-reviewed neuroscience, more than 20 years in diverse school communities, and my experience as a mother. Once you understand the five conditions, any struggle you bring to me connects back to one of them, and you can choose a response that fits the cause.

How we work together

  1. 1We learn the five conditions together.
  2. 2You bring the struggle you are seeing.
  3. 3We trace it back to a condition and choose the response.

  • How I Function

Sets the brain's capacity for the day, through sleep, nutrition, hydration, exercise, and health.

  • How I Learn

The levels a brain moves through to learn something new, from hearing about it for the first time to becoming an expert.

  • How I Manage

The executive function skills that direct attention and effort toward a goal.

  • How I Feel

The emotional state that opens up or narrows attention.

  • What I Do

Everything working together, the part the world can see, like motivation, engagement, and achievement.

The topic people ask me about most

Executive function is more than getting a binder and hoping for the best

  1. 1Attention and Flexibility
  2. 2Organization
  3. 3Planning and Preparation
  4. 4Task Initiation
  5. 5Time Management

The guidance we usually get is strategies, like planners, checklists, and color-coded folders, and strategies are one small part of executive function. The neuroscience shows what is happening in the brain, so you can choose the support that fits.

  • In a national study of 8,920 U.S. children, working memory, flexible thinking, and impulse control in kindergarten each predicted reading, math, and science achievement in 2nd grade (Morgan et al., 2019).
  • The skills build on each other, so trouble managing time often starts with an earlier skill, like getting started.
Learn more about executive function

About half of people with ADHD show a measurable difference in executive function (Willcutt et al., 2005). I help the adults around these learners see which of the five skills is getting in the way and choose the support that matches it.

What we work on

Other questions we can finally answer

These questions come from parents, teachers, specialists, school leaders, and learners themselves. Under each question is the explanation people often give. Those explanations do not help us move forward. Once you know the reason for a struggle, you can finally move forward, and The Learning Framework® is the tool that shows you the reason.

RememberingA learner asks

Why do I know it when I study and then blank on the test?

“I am just bad at tests.”

AttentionA teacher asks

Why do I feel like I have to entertain my class just to keep their attention?

“Learners today just cannot focus.”

HomeworkA parent asks

Why does my child forget their homework, even though we talk about it every day?

“They are being careless.”

Impulse controlA teacher asks

Why does a student keep acting without thinking, even after we have talked about it again and again?

“They are not listening.”

Emotions and learningA parent asks

Why does a small moment turn into a meltdown?

“They are overreacting.”

Motivation and interestA teacher asks

Why do so many of my students seem uninterested in what we are learning?

“They do not care about school.”

AgencyA school leader asks

How do we help our students take ownership of their learning?

“They need more responsibility.”

PerseveranceA specialist asks

Why does this student shut down as soon as something gets hard?

“They give up too easily.”

Good days and hard daysA learner asks

Why am I fine one day and struggling the next?

“I am not trying hard enough on the hard days.”

What it could be

Every one of these questions can come from any of the five conditions.

How I FunctionHow I LearnHow I ManageHow I FeelWhat I Do

The same struggle can have a different cause for each learner. When you can see which condition is not being met, these common struggles become addressable, and you can respond with precision, accuracy, and efficacy.

It shows the five conditions every brain needs in order to learn, explains each part, and gives you the question to ask when learning is hard. It is written so the learner, the parent, the educator, and the specialist can all use it.

The Learning Framework® is a simple model that brings thousands of research studies together in one place. That simplicity is what everyone who supports a learner needs: a clear place to start and one common language to share. We can only apply it as deeply as we understand it, so when you are ready to go further, book a conversation with me, or check the box below to hear about upcoming workshops, classes, and the launch of TheLearningFramework.org.

Work with me

Professional learning for everyone around a learner

We can all learn how to support the learners in front of us, and the answer is closer than most people realize. It goes back to understanding what is happening in the brain. Once we understand that, we can choose a much better response.

Better together

Finally, a common language for everyone who supports a learner

Everyone who has tried to help a struggling learner has felt the frustration of a support system that does not fit together. The school, the family, and the specialists are each working with what they know. The Learning Framework® gives everyone one common language, built on the neuroscience of how learning happens in the brain, so you can finally work together. The solution is here.

  1. 1

    Educators

Learn the five conditions together, with workshops and coaching all year.

  2. 2

    Families

An evening parent series in the same school year.

  3. 3

    Learners

Student sessions that fit how your school works.

  4. 4

    Specialists

School plans and home plans aligned, so everyone is on the same page.

What learning together looks like

Hands-on, active, and fun to be part of

I design every session so you experience the science before we name it. People are up, talking, and trying things, and the time goes quickly.

You feel it first

Hands-on labs let you experience the concept in your own brain first.

You talk before I teach

You make connections with your lab partners first, so you arrive curious about the answers.

You move around the room

You talk with others from across the room, hear their ideas, and make more connections.

You leave with something to use

Every session ends with simple strategies to use immediately.

About me

I am Dr. Stephanie Helfand

I have spent more than 20 years in diverse school communities as a special educator, a classroom teacher, an instructional coach, and a principal on Chicago’s North Shore. In every one of them, I saw the same common struggles, and they all went back to the brain. Once we understand what is happening in the brain, we can choose a better response. I am also the mother of two neurodivergent children, so I know these questions from the kitchen table as well as from the classroom.

It is my personal mission to help as many learners, families, and educators as I can, using everything I have experienced as an educator and a mother.

I built The Learning Framework® from the peer-reviewed neuroscience of learning and from that practice. All brains are born to learn and achieve, and my work is helping the adults around a learner create the conditions that allow it.
